Jia Wood Day Master (甲木): Meaning and How to Find Yours

Jia Wood means that the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar in your BaZi chart is 甲 (Jia), traditionally classified as Yang Wood. It is not a birth-year animal or a label you can infer from being born in a Wood year. Read the Day Pillar first.

Use your Gregorian birth date to calculate the Day Pillar. If its first character is 甲, the Day Master is Jia. For example, 甲子 and 甲午 are both Jia days, although their branches differ. A 甲 in the Year Pillar alone does not make the Day Master Jia. For births near a date boundary, check the recorded time and calculation convention.
Jia Wood vs Yi Wood
Both are Wood stems. Jia is Yang Wood, often pictured as a trunk or upright tree; Yi is Yin Wood, often pictured as a vine or flexible plant. This is a difference in symbolic language, not a ranking of people. You cannot decide compatibility or the better career from Jia versus Yi alone. The sixty stem-branch cycle contains six Jia combinations: 甲子 Jia Zi, 甲寅 Jia Yin, 甲辰 Jia Chen, 甲午 Jia Wu, 甲申 Jia Shen and 甲戌 Jia Xu. All share the same Yang Wood day stem; their Day Branch is different. “Jia Wood” therefore identifies less information than a full Day Pillar. Use your calculated pair when comparing readings, rather than treating all Jia birthdays as one chart.
Strong Jia Wood vs weak Jia Wood
In traditional BaZi, “strong” and “weak” describe the day stem’s support within a chart. They do not mean a strong or weak person. Month and season, roots in branches, supporting stems and interactions all matter. Counting visible Wood characters is not enough. Two Jia charts can have different assessments, and schools may weight the same evidence differently. Unknown birth time leaves the Hour Pillar unavailable.
What does rooted Jia Wood mean?
A branch can contain hidden stems. 寅 Yin contains 甲 Jia, 丙 Bing and 戊 Wu; 亥 Hai contains 壬 Ren and 甲 Jia. These are examples of a Jia stem appearing below the visible stems. 卯 Mao carries 乙 Yi, another Wood stem. Traditions consider this support when discussing roots, but the root’s context and interactions still matter. A root is not a score for confidence, health or wealth.
Ten Gods for a Jia Day Master
Use Jia as the reference stem, then compare the element relationship and yin–yang polarity of the other stem. These are traditional relationship names; “Wealth” does not establish income and “Seven Killings” does not predict violence. The table labels a stem relationship, without assessing its strength or role in a particular chart.

Does Jia Wood always need Water or Metal?
No universal “Jia needs Water” rule can identify a chart’s useful element. Water generating Wood is one relationship in the Five Elements; whether more Water is helpful depends on the whole chart and the method. Ask which evidence supports the recommendation, how season and roots were considered, and what changes if an unknown hour is supplied. Colors, jewelry and directions do not follow automatically from the day stem.
What can one Jia stem tell you?
It establishes a reference stem for traditional chart relationships. It does not predict a marriage date, wealth level, health or a fixed career. For love and work, use the archetype as a prompt: where do you need consistency, and where would flexibility help? Keep decisions grounded in the actual relationship, skills and circumstances.
Why did another calculator give me Yi instead of Jia?
Adjacent days use adjacent stems in the ten-stem cycle, so a one-day shift can change Jia to Yi. Check calendar conversion, local date, midnight versus 23:00 rollover, and whether a solar-time correction crossed midnight. Li Chun changes the BaZi year boundary; it does not by itself change your day stem. Keep the input and calculation receipt when comparing results.
